Premier League Returns

For soccer fans around the world, the start of the Premier League season means months of competition, rivalries and some of the biggest clubs in English soccer facing off. The Premier League is the highest level of professional men’s soccer in England. It was created in 1992 and currently has 20 teams competing for the league title. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned Premier League Champion. The Premier League is also about more than just winning the title. The teams near the top of the table compete for spots in European Competitions such as the Champions League, while the bottom three teams are relegated to the Championship, England’s second division. This creates pressure throughout the entire table because teams are competing for different goals all season.
“The league is so interesting because there are so many good teams competing at the same time,” said sophomore Marcela Aston. “You never really that what is going to happen because one game can change the table.”
The 2026-27 season features 20 clubs, including familiar teams: Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester united, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. Three newly promoted teams: Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town have also joined the league this season.
After years of coming close, Arsenal finally reached the top of English soccer last season. Now the club faces a new challenge: staying there.
Arsenal enters the season as the defending champion, meaning every team will be looking to take points away from the team that finished at the top last year. While winning the title was a major accomplishment, repeating it could be even harder with so many strong teams competing.
Arsenal started its title defense with confidence, including a 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield. The match gave Arsenal its first accomplishment and provided an early statement against one of its biggest competitors.
However, Arsenal still has weaknesses that could cause problems throughout the season. One of the biggest concerns is staying healthy and consistent. William Saliba suffered a back injury during the 2026 World Cup and was expected to miss an extended period, while Jurrien Timber was also dealing with an injury that kept him out for weeks. With 38 league matches plus other competitions, injuries and fatigue can become a problem. These injuries could test Arsenal’s defensive dept and force other players to take on bigger roles as the season continues.
Arsenal also has strong competition across the league. Manchester City has been one of the biggest forces in the Premier League for years, while Liverpool has consistently competed near the top of the table. Chelsea and Manchester United will also be looking to challenge for higher placing. Newcastle United and Aston Villa could make the race even more competitive.
“I think Tottenham will be one of the biggest competitors,” said sophomore Carter Westcott. “But teams like Chelsea and Liverpool could also make the title race more competitive.”
Teams at the other end of the table will have their own goals. The newly promoted clubs will attempt to remain in the Premier League, while other teams will be fighting to avoid relegation. That means every match will have an impact, even when teams are not competing for the title.
“The bottom of the table is just as interesting because those teams are fighting to stay in the Premier League, every point matter when you are trying to avoid relegation,” Aston said.
One of Arsenal’s biggest strengths is its defense. Players such as David Raya and William Saliba will be important for keeping opponents from scoring. At the same time, Arsenal’s attack will need to continue producing. Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard will be important in creating chances, while Declan Rice will play a major role in the midfield.
The biggest challenge for Arsenal may not be winning individual games but maintaining its level throughout the season. A strong start can create momentum, but the Premier League is decided over months of competition.
Arsenal is no longer the team trying to prove it belongs at the top. It is now the team everyone else wants to beat. Last season, Arsenal proved it could reach the top. Now, the club must prove it can stay there.
