Giorgio Armani, the icon of fashion and business, the mind behind the creation of an empire, passed away at the age of 91. In the past 50 years since Armani’s establishment, they have had a tremendous impact on not merely the fashion industry but also social and cultural trends.
In the early periods of his life, Armani attended medical school then eventually served in the military, when on leave, he worked as a window dresser in Milan, Italy. This led to his climb in the fashion industry, resulting in the creation of the well-known brand Armani in 1975, which he had established alongside Sergio Galeotti. The style of the brand surrounded luxury, catering to those with elite taste. Companies under the Armani parent brand flourished -- each carrying items focusing on quality and including items from each category of fashion for each demographic, such as suits, jewelry and bags. The rapid growth and sub-brands allowed the company to become one of the most influential clothing brands in the world. Not only did the luxurious items garner attention and popularity, but they promoted practical but powerful clothing. It continued to work with the trends of the 1970s and 1980s, such as the growth of health and fitness awareness.
Inspired by the classic era of Hollywood, such as Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, Armani discovered the red carpet as a source of business and influence. He collaborated with Wanda McDaniel, a well-connected social columnist, to increase the number of his clientele, according to The Conversation Media. The 1980s and 1990s are considered his ‘prime era’, where the company’s clothing was most impactful and popular. His ‘power dressing’ - the concept of a silhouette encouraging individual empowerment - an androgynous style for both men and women, appealed to a large variety of tastes and styles, reconstructing figures in an innovative way. Beyond just clothing, the brand expanded to other categories such as perfume, accessories and even hotels.
By the year 2000, the Armani brand had established itself as a global fashion superpower. The products continued to follow ideas of elegance, class and quality, while they continued to expand. Cosmetics, restaurants and more hotels were built, maintaining their relevance in the face of a new generation. It grew into athletic industries, creating a connection between sports and luxury items. Current pop stars, celebrities and other influential figures have built platforms alongside Armani, growing not just their personal brand but once again spreading brand recognition to a new audience. These mutually beneficial campaigns allow both sides of the contract to gain traction and revenue, adding to the endless cycle of trends and consumerism that can be traced back to their respective names.
“I think that the elegant and sleek look will forever be a staple,” said senior art student Emma Gougelmann. “There has been a great influence with the cleaner, smoother lines and silhouettes in both men and women’s clothing. This particular style is shown more often and more as outerwear than just for special occasions. I think that Giorgio’s style really contributes to the luxurious outerwear and especially women wearing tailored suits.”
Armani’s recent passing will have a profound effect on not merely the fashion industry, but also social and cultural characteristics of the current world. His name will forever be attached to the iconic and impactful empire that has spanned generations. Its influence on popular culture, the development of trends and production of new clothing will be felt for years to come. Fashion shows, photographs, establishments and campaigns ensure Armani’s eternal memory as someone who has shaped the fashion industry forever.
